Digger review

Spoiler-free review

A farce about resurrecting a farce, Digger blasts its concept at full volume but never convinces me it belongs to this movie; the meta conceit feels slapped on to salvage the chaos rather than sharpen it. Tom Cruise throws himself into it—there’s real energy there—but I’d rather watch him and Alejandro Iñárritu talk shop for two hours than endure this loud, exhausting package. Jesse Plemons and Sandra Hüller are bafflingly underused. There’s craft and star power, sure, just not the cohesion or wit to make the racket worth it.

This is a farce about a farce being revived by people living in a farcical world created by people who responded to a real crisis as though it were a farce.

Starring Tom Cruise. Directed by Alejandro Iñárritu.

I would honestly have rather spent two hours watching Tom and Alex talk with each other about filmmaking.

This was loud and tiresome and I wanted to walk out. The underlying conceit here feels pasted on, as if they realized how much of a mess they’d made with a straight farce but didn’t wanna waste Tom’s performances. Wasted Plemons and Hüller, though, by having them here and asking nothing of them.

That’s all I’ve got. Go see it for yourself.
