Marty Supreme review

Spoiler-free review

Timothée Chalamet turns Marty Supreme’s hustler into the ideal lovable, hateable protagonist, surrounded by sharp performances, confident writing and cinematography worthy of the film’s awards ambitions. Even Mr. Wonderful shows up and delivers. This is stronger from beginning to end than several titles being treated as immovable Oscar favorites, particularly One Battle After Another, and I would happily see it again. Awards narratives harden early and often survive contact with better work; I hope voters remain flexible enough to let this one into the real Best Picture conversation.

This is a stronger film from beginning to end than the current Oscar favorites Sinners and One Battle After Another. Timothée Chalamet once again delivers an outstanding performance as our lovable yet hateable hustler protagonist. The script is well written, the performances across the board are sharp, and the cinematography is genuinely impressive. Even Mr. Wonderful is in there killing it.

I loved this movie and would happily see it again. At this point, it feels like the narrative around One Battle After Another being a lock for best picture is set in stone, but this movie is better. The Secret Agent with Wagner Moura is better too. Honestly, I even think Sinners, which I did not entirely love, is better than OBAA. But it is what it is.

Hopefully things shift a bit as we get closer to the big day, because this film deserves to be in the conversation for the big award.
