Oh, Hi! review

Spoiler-free review

Oh, Hi! attempts to evolve from romantic comedy into exaggerated farce, but a current of genuine creepiness runs beneath the jokes from the beginning. I kept wondering how quickly the audience’s laughter would die if the characters’ genders were reversed, which makes the comedy’s moral balance difficult to ignore. The two leads give strong, committed performances and I still enjoyed the movie considerably despite that discomfort. As a Screen Unseen selection, it became my second consecutive win—even if the unease may prove more durable than the laughs.

I know this was supposed to be a rom com that transitioned into a humorous over the top farce, but it felt creepy at times throughout and I can't help but think that the laughs here would whither away and die very quickly if the gender roles had been reversed. Still I enjoyed this a lot and the acting performances were good by the two leads. Two wins in a row for me for the screen unseens.
