Scare Out review

Spoiler-free review
Scare Out reduces institutional paranoia to an endless conference-room loop: someone announces there is a mole, everyone asks everyone else whether they are the mole, ordinary biography becomes suspicious and the process eventually treats its own confusion as insight. The most revealing possibility is that the mole is not any employee but the investigation itself—a system capable of sealing the building while congratulating itself for getting somewhere. That imagined scene captures the movie more efficiently than the movie captures its own conspiracy. Consider the time saved.

Scene: “Internal Review”
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM – NIGHT
A sterile room lit by harsh fluorescent light. A long table. Identical folders stacked in precise rows.
A red light blinks on a recorder.
At the head sits THE DIRECTOR. Around the table: THE DEPUTY, THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR, several ANALYSTS, and THE INTERN.
Silence.
THE DIRECTOR We think there is a mole.
(beat)
THE DIRECTOR Are you the mole?
THE DEPUTY No. Are you the mole?
THE DIRECTOR I asked first.
THE DEPUTY Then I am definitely not the mole.
ANALYST #1 If he says he’s not the mole, that is exactly what the mole would say.
THE DIRECTOR Correct. Someone here is the mole.
Everyone nods seriously.
THE DIRECTOR We must question everyone in the organization.
(turning)
Junior Supervisor… are you the mole?
THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR No, Director. Are you looking for a mole!
ANALYST #2 flips open a file.
ANALYST #2 Employee records show people updating each other constantly. Could they be the mole?
ANALYST #3 Collectively?
ANALYST #2 Possibly.
THE DIRECTOR A collaborative mole.
Everyone writes this down.
THE DEPUTY They all went to school together.
THE DIRECTOR Suspicious.
ANALYST #1 And before that they were from the same hometown.
THE DIRECTOR Very suspicious.
THE INTERN Lots of people are from the same hometown.
Everyone slowly turns to stare at THE INTERN.
THE DIRECTOR Noted.
ANALYST #3 Some of them went to Europe or North America after college.
THE DIRECTOR International exposure.
THE DEPUTY Was he the mole?
THE DIRECTOR Which he?
THE DEPUTY The one who went abroad.
ANALYST #1 Several went abroad.
THE DIRECTOR Then several could be the mole.
THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR Or none.
The room freezes.
THE DIRECTOR Explain.
THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR If everyone could be the mole… then the mole could hide among everyone… by being no one.
Long silence.
THE DEPUTY That sounds like something a mole would say.
THE DIRECTOR nods.
THE DIRECTOR Write that down.
THE INTERN scribbles quickly.
THE DIRECTOR Let us begin again.
(beat)
THE DIRECTOR We think there is a mole.
THE DEPUTY Are you the mole?
THE DIRECTOR No. Are you the mole?
THE DEPUTY No.
ANALYST #2 Someone here is the mole.
THE DIRECTOR We must question everyone in the organization.
(turning, same cadence)
Junior Supervisor… are you the mole?
THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR No. Are you the mole?
THE DIRECTOR I already answered.
THE JUNIOR SUPERVISOR That is exactly what a mole would say.
A beat.
The recorder’s red light blinks faster.
THE INTERN Sir… what if the mole is just… the process?
Everyone stops.
THE DIRECTOR slowly smiles.
THE DIRECTOR Now we are getting somewhere.
He presses the intercom.
THE DIRECTOR Security. Seal the building.
(beat)
THE DIRECTOR No one leaves until we find the mole.
The red light continues blinking.
FADE OUT.
