The Threesome review

By Joel Humphries · Watched 09.06.25

★★★½ 3.5 / 5

Spoiler-free review

The Threesome repeatedly approaches the safe, obvious exit offered by a conventional romantic comedy and chooses a more complicated route. That willingness to let its relationships become genuinely uncertain made the film substantially better than I expected, and I remained unsure how the emotional arrangement would resolve until it actually did. Surprise is not automatically sophistication, but here it reflects characters allowed to resist the genre’s easiest assignments. I enjoyed the uncertainty as much as the comedy.

This was substantially better than I thought it was gonna be. It had multiple opportunities to go the straightforward rom-com route and it chose not to.

I enjoyed it, and I wasn't sure how it would all work out until the end, so that's pretty good.
