Twinless review

Spoiler-free review

Twinless may announce itself more sexually than I expected, but sex and sexuality are not its real subject. This is an intimate film about grief, loneliness and an unlikely platonic bond between men who need forms of brotherhood neither knew how to seek. Dylan O’Brien plays twins—one outgoing, sharp and gay, the other introverted, simpler and straight—and makes them feel like separate human beings rather than a technical performance exercise. That dual work deserves recognition. One of the strongest smaller films of the cycle, it uses an initially surprising surface to reach something tender and emotionally specific.

I really liked this, but I'm embarrassed to say that this was a lot gayer than I expected. At least early on. I'm not sure what I expected, but I don't think I expected an all in gay sex scene from Dylan O'Brien.  😆 But whatever. Sex of any sort is not a big part of this movie, so don't let that take throw you off.  The movie is not really about sex or sexuality. It's about loss and loneliness and PLATONIC male friendship and brotherhood in the most unlikely circumstances. This is one of the best smaller films I've seen this cycle. Dylan O'Brien plays a pair of twins, one outgoing extroverted smart and gay  and one introverted kind of simple and straight and he makes you believe both characters. He's gonna win awards for this one. Maybe not the biggest ones but he'll get recognition.
